November 2006 - First AGM of RSHG

The First Annual General Meeting of Ryde Social Heritage Group was held on 11th November 2006 from 10:30 to 12:30 at the George St Centre, Ryde, Isle of Wight. Sally-Ann Garrett provided a report of the activities of the Group over the past year, and the leaders of the working groups made short presentations on the activities of the sub-groups.

Members voted on the adoption of the constitution, and agreed that this should be reviewed by the Committee over the coming months. The members also agreed on a membership fee of £10 per year, and elected the Officers: Sally-Ann as the Chairperson, Matthew Bell as the Treasurer, Janette Kitching as the Secretary, and David Earle as Membership Secretary. Ann and Les Barrett, and Carol Strong were co-opted to join the Committee, and Sally-Ann asked if there are others who are interested, as the Group can co-opt up to six other members to the Committee.

17 members renewed their membership and paid the new membership fee at the meeting. Three new members signed up on the day. A letter will be sent to the remainder of the membership to remind them to renew their membership.

There was an exhibition to commemorate the War Dead buried in the Cemetery, from both First and Second World Wars, and the members held a two minutes silence at 11:00. The exhibition included details of the 51 graves in Ryde Cemetery and some war poems.

After the meeting, Leaders of the Working Groups were available to provide information about their groups: Carol Strong from Publications; David Earle from Mapping; Janette Kitching from Transcribing; Sally-Ann from Natural History and Family History; and Ann and Les Barrett from Research and Members were able to pick up the latest Newsletter.
