Ryde is a town rich in social history with much evidence of its Georgian origins and Victorian development. Any walk around Ryde is informative, interesting and inspirational.

 

Ryde Social Heritage Group is committed to helping people learn about the history of our town and its people.

GUIDED TOURS OF RYDE CEMETERY and ILLUSTRATED TALKS

 

If you have a group that would like to visit Ryde Cemetery and learn more about the rich history of the town Ryde Social Heritage Group would be pleased arrange for one of our members to give you a guided tour and to host your visit.

 

We also have members who are able to visit other groups and meetings to give illustrated talks on various aspects of Ryde's history.

RYDE CEMETERY

 

What better place to start than Ryde Cemetery dating from 1840. Ryde Social Heritage Group has produced a range of information and trail leaflets for the cemetery as well as resources for primary schools.

 

Many of the children’s activities can be run by school staff and if you wish to use the Cemetery Heritage and Learning Centre or have workshop leaders we can arrange this. Contact us here.

The Heritage and Learning Centre in Ryde Cemetery has excellent facilities including a classroom with tables, chairs, small kitchen area, toilet, computer suite and plenty of information relating to the history of the Cemetery, the flora and fauna, the people buried there and about the history of Ryde town. There is also exhibition space to display work carried out by school groups.

PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDIES IN RYDE CEMETERY.

 

There are plenty of opportunities for using Ryde Cemetery to cover all aspects of the Primary Curriculum.

 

 

GROUP WORK

 

When working with groups of children it is worthwhile naming each group after a particular person buried within the cemetery and with an interesting tomb/memorial and life story. Each group then has the extra activity of finding the grave of the person their group is named after and can do further internet research on this person afterwards. RYDE HERITAGE AUDIO TRAIL

 

This is a walking tour of Ryde town centre and the Esplanade illustrated with historical detail selected from archives, devised and written by members of Ryde Socail Heritage Group. The trail includes a map with a suggested route and audio files can be downloaded to MP3 players and listened to at various points along the trail. The whole trail is accessible to mobility scooter users. If you are not able to undertake the trail you can still listen to the audio files on your computer.

ST THOMAS HERITAGE CENTRE, ST THOMAS STREET, RYDE

 

St Thomas’ Chapel of ease was built in 1719 by Thomas Player, lord of the manor of Ryde. At the time Ryde was in the parish of Newchurch and residents had to travel some six miles to attend the Parish Church. The chapel was replaced by St Thomas Church in 1872. The church was the family church of the Players and then the Brigstockes until the late 1950s. St Thomas Heritage Centre is currently owned and managed by the Isle of Wight Council, unfortunately it is rarely open to the public, although it can be hired by local community groups for suitable events. Its interior is fascinating to explore with many of the original Georgian and Victorian features still in place. The Centre is usually open to the public with workshops, concerts and exhibitions during Ryde Arts Festival week which takes place each summer, and for the Lantern Parade and Wreath Making workshops in December.

 

If you would like to visit St Thomas’ Church at another time, perhaps combined with a local town trail, Ryde Social Heritage Group can arrange this, give a guided tour and have workshop materials available should you require them.

 

RISK ASSESSMENTS

 

Need some help with risk assessment forms? Ryde Social Heritage Group has produced some basic risk assessments for local area activities which cover most eventualities. They may be downloaded and adapted by you to suit your needs. They should be used in conjunction with any individual risk assessment required for specific children.
